My goal for the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! was to have the engine in and the Weber's test fit before the holidays...accomplished that goal today. The motor mounts still need gussets and the manifold is just tacked together, but they're on there. And they fit like a glove!

carb'd 2JZ?
I can hear the Supra forums crying from here.

I think they might forgive our sacrilege...we made nice with our Aerocabin at Supras in Vegas.
Besides, this is going into a 1970 MS51 Crown. When I'm done, I want it to look like it belongs. I've got a couple other tricks up my sleeve to make that happen.

Carbs on an engine that originally came with EFI?
What's the benefit of doing this over something like an ITB/Megasquirt setup?

yeah, you'll still have more than double the power they had from factory and it should look like it fits. I'm looking forward to the end results.
Do you have plans to make a video of it? I'm interested to hear how it'll sound.
Soarer turned out top notch by the way.

Awesomeness mainly.
My goal is for the modern engine to look like it belongs there. I still have a long way to go and some more custom bits to fabricate to make that happen. I thought about ITB's, and you can get a nice set of Jenvey's in the Weber DCOE bolt pattern that look very similar to the carbs, but the injectors/fuel rail kill the look in my opinion. And it would be more expensive to go with those and a computer. You could get cheaper ITB's, but they wouldn't have the look.
I will be using a programmable ignition system, possibly Megajolt which is like Megasquirt just for ignition. That and since Webers were designed for adjustability it should be tuneable to the same power levels as a comparable ITB setup. It should be more than double the horsepower of the original motor with better throttle response. It won't be a 1000hp turbo JZ motor, but it should give the old Crown a good bit of pep.

We'll definitely be making a video with good sound before we sell it. I've actually got a standalone sound recorder with good mics, so it should be good. I'm sure the sound those carbs make will be a major selling point! Not sure yet what I'm going to do for exhaust though. The factory 3-1 manifolds aren't bad, and it goes with my psuedo-stock theme. I may keep those and run duals with an x-pipe and glasspacks just to see how that sounds.

Maybe it's just me, but if you're that worried about period-correct looks you probably should have picked an engine other than a 2JZ.
Slapping a set of carbs on it to make it look like it belongs seems a bit backwards.

So what engine should I have picked then? You could pick a lot of motors for different reasons...and I'm going a lot further than slapping a set of carbs on it. This is just a mockup photo.
It's a whole package type of thing. It's about opening the hood and having it look like what is there belongs there while still being a serious upgrade. Hopefully when you see it done you'll understand.
I chose this because it's a Toyota motor, not against bastard swaps, but if there is a good option why not. I also like the fact it's a twincam. There isn't a good 6-cyl period correct twincam Toyota motor available at a reasonable price. You'd be crazy to put a 3m in it... The car originally had a 2m straight six, so I wanted to keep a straight six in it. Lots of reasons it came to this setup.

It would be hard to beat a 3M but I imagine those are not easy to come by

Yes...I guess it would be...or maybe 2JZ-G3C? That's a little much though...

It's just you. I transitioned to fuel infection some time in the mid 90s and have been devoid of soul ever since. Carbs make every engine better. Not more powerful or more efficient, but better. The sounds, the way they don't always make max power with your foot on the floor, the way they sputter like a P-51 on start-up... carbs are an experience . A great experience. They engage you, demand that you acknowledge their presence. And I'm not talking about some Nancy Boy Quadrajet or SU that was designed to be smooth and unremarkable, but a nasty set of Webbers or a no-choke Holly. Carbs that were never meant for your wife's car. THAT'S where the soul of the hoon lives!

You chose right. I love resto-mods and this car is all that is right with the world. Is it more drivable and easy to live with than fuel infection? Not if you're doing it right! I, along with the rest of your people, will wait patiently for videos where we can all revel in the glorious song this machine will sing!

I'd probably be interested in buying it if I was stateside. I'll just have to import my own from Japan :P

We can ship it anywhere...I know you guys love your Crown's down there! Just out of curiosity, would you be able to register it there...would it have to be 'engineered' since it's a swap?
I'm modifying the steering too..rack and pinion conversion. I've spent a lot of time on the Toymods and Australian Ford forums. Those guys use a center pivot rack from a Daewoo, so I'm following their lead on that one. I bought the rack from a UK junkyard. I'm sure the guy packing it up was puzzled as to why he was shipping a RHD Daewoo rack to America...

I am too! It's not running yet, but I can't wait to find out. I'll be posting a video when I get it running. I still haven't made up my mind what exhaust to use yet either.
